The Magic of Hostels in the US: A Guide for Au Pairs

Traveling around the US on a budget might seem tough, but there's a fantastic solution waiting for you—hostels! 🏨✨ Hostels are the perfect place to stay in cities without breaking the bank. Now if you never stayed in one, it can be quite an experience. And if you are about to say “But Michelle, I could never. There are so many weird stories out there.” Listen. Girl. There are only TWO ways a Hostel stay can go.

One: It’s great. Everything is good. Just what you needed.

TWO: Something is super bad, BUT it’s a super fun story to tell afterwards.

So either way, it’s a win. I will tell you now everything I know about staying at a Hostel and after that you can decide, if this is something you can consider. Let’s dive into how you can make the most out of your hostel experience and have an unforgettable adventure!

Why Choose Hostels?

Hostels are budget-friendly, social, and full of surprises! Here's why they’re a top choice for Au Pairs:

Affordable Stays

Hostels offer dormitory-style rooms, which are much cheaper than hotels. You can find a bed in a shared room for as low as $20 a night! This is perfect for saving money while exploring new places. Dorm rooms, that means there are multiple beds in one room with a shared bathroom. Most of the time you can choose between mixed or female only. Which obviously means if it’s a room with mixed genders or only female. (Usually just females are slightly more expensive, that’s why I usually choose mixed. Don’t tell my mom but I don’t mind it)

Make New Friends

Traveling solo? No worries! Hostels are known for their friendly and social atmosphere. You'll meet fellow travelers from all over the world, making it easy to make new friends and create lasting memories. 👫🌍

Safety First

It’s normal to feel a bit scared the first time you stay in a hostel. But rest assured, most hostels are safe and secure. They have lockers to store your valuables, and many hostels have 24/7 reception.

Tips for First-Time Hostel Stays

Research and Reviews

Before booking, check reviews on websites like Hostelworld.com. Look for hostels with high ratings for cleanliness, safety, and location. Pay attention to the most recent ones.

Pack Smart

Bring a padlock for your locker, a sleep mask, earplugs, and a pair of flip-flops for the shower. These little things can make your stay much more comfortable. I would even add a travel towel. Not all Hostels offer Towels or at extra charge, so bring your own, a lightweight microfiber should be in your essential either way. (I have mine linked on my amazon storefront)

Respect the Space

Hostels are shared spaces, so be mindful of others. Keep your area tidy and respect quiet hours.

Benefits for Solo Travelers

Join Group Activities

Hostels often organize group trips and activities like city tours, pub crawls, and hiking adventures. These are great opportunities to explore the city and meet other travelers. 🏙️🥾 Other travelers and the staff often know the best budget activities.

Use Hostel Resources

Most hostels provide city maps, travel guides, and even discounts on local attractions. Make sure to ask the reception for tips and recommendations.

Kitchen Magic

One of the best things about hostels is the communal kitchen. You can save money by cooking your own meals. Many hostels also have free food shelves where travelers leave behind unopened food items. Take advantage of this and whip up a delicious meal without spending a dime! 🍳🍲

Final Thoughts

Staying in hostels is an amazing way to travel cheaply, make new friends, and have unique experiences. Embrace the adventure, stay safe, and enjoy every moment of your Au Pair journey in the US! I personally have a rule of thumb, if I can get around with public transportation then I will stay in a hostel to safe money. If there is no public transportation I will get a rental car and sleep in it.

Happy travels, and see you out there! ✈️🌟
