Cheapest Way To Sleep On A Road Trip
Road trips are essential. The US is beautiful and huge! Places are spaced out and if you want to make the most out of your travel you have to do it by car. So Road Trips, no questions, are THE way to travel in the US.
But with the prices of rental cars, we need a cheap way to sleep! And this is where I come in the game to tell you:
Sleep in your rental car
Wait, what did I say? I know I hear ya. It sounds like a crazy idea.
But you save the money that you would use to pay on hotels and use it for cool stuff to see and do! I did already a couple car camping trips before I become an AuPair but with my own car where I can put a mattress in and make it really comfy.
But if you are traveling by plane and just rent a car you don’t have those resources. So how to make it work?
Say goodbye to comfy. I’m sorry, it will just not happen. But there are ways that make it alright and totally worth it if you save that money and wake up for sunrise at horseshoe bend as the first person and you have the whole place to yourself!
Ever slept in a plane? It’s like that. Option 1 is to just sleep in the driver/passenger seat. Put the seat back, crumble up your hoodie as a pillow and use your jacket as a blanket!
Other option is to sleep on the back seats. If you’re tall like me, pull your legs to your chest and sleep like a baby. Use your clothes to cover up the buckle thingies, otherwise they will poke you in the back in the middle of the night.
If you are on a surf trip ( 😉, I hope you are at some point) and you need to fold the backseats down to fit in your surfboard than you just scoutch next to it. This will hurt your back after a couple hours without a mattress. So I like to switch during the night between the options I explained earlier.
Premium option: if the trip is longer than just 2-3 nights and you want some comfort you can invest some money ($50) to make it comfortable. Head to Walmart and invest $20 into a mattress topper and some $ into a blanket + pillow. Throw that in the back on the folded backseat and tadaa, premium version. (you can just donate it to Goodwill before you leave)
And now you ask me, is it SAVE?
I’m still alive, right? So yes, with the right hacks it’s save and will keep you out of trouble. Hopp over and read the next article on how to stay safe while solo traveling. So you can go right ahead and plan your next roadtrip!
Until then,
your bestie Michelle!
